The Fujian Professional Photonic Technical College

Xiamen, China
The 550,000sqm Fujian Professional Photonic Technial Collage is situated in SE China where the region is developing its manufacturing facilities and reputation in LED technology. The college aims to educate a local work force in these progressive technologies.

10 Design is responsible for the masterplan design, the architectural design for five of the nine buildings, and the landscape design in the same phase.

The principal idea is to weave the large scale college masterplan into the site's natural setting, preserving and enhancing the existing environment with a number of non-invasive structures, balanced against an efficient campus design.

The design strategy began by analysing the site, the typography, vegetation, and wind distribution in order to enhance and preserve the existing character. Taking advantage of the lake, stream, vistas, and also buildings within existing site levels, the campus planning strongly embraces sustainability strategies, wildlife habitat retention, and water systems protection.
A radial campus planning diagram is planned around the intersection of three existing streams. In addition, a circular bridge is sited at the centre of this intersection to act not only as an architectural focus but also as respect to the Chinese tradition of feng shui. The bridge is believed to focus the energy or "qi" of the site, thus creating a spiritual centre.
